"Have you ever noticed," said Dimble, "that the universe, and every little bit of the universe, is always hardening and narrowing and coming to a point?" (283)
fantastic book... be sure and email me when you're done with it, as I'd love to know what you thought of it. have you read The Abolition of Man? if you read it shortly after That Hideous Strength, you'll see that the two books are really on the same topic, although Lewis is always throwing philosophical, psychological and theological reflections in every chapter, it seems (which I don't mind a bit!).
Gosh, I like the book but I'm not sure if I can agree with Dimble's observation. To me, it seems that the universe in always expanding and loosening and shooting off in unexpected directions.
The best part about that book is the description of the college meeting at Bracton. On a side note...if I'm ever elected President, I'll make THS required reading for all English-speaking grad students along with Lord of the Rings. I think I'll also ban polyester.
It's the same statement really. Evil people get worse, Good people get better. It's inevitable. It's a Law of the Universe, like Entropy. Life always changes for better or worse...on the biological level, mind level, and spirit level.

And The Abolition of Man was a really hard book to read (for me). A bit dry.

in regards to whether or not this comment is true.... compare to this statement....the dark is getting darker while the light is getting lighter...
