Here are some recent pictures of my House....

I got married last week. The whole theme was medieval. I don't know what happened to my husband while these pictures were being taken. Maybe he went to get some cake.

"Noticed" by Mute Math sounds like a Police Song.
For some reason, I cannot post photos at the moment. Sorry, the promised pics will have to wait.

In doing research on social networking sites, I have compiled a list of a few of my favorites:

Meetup --want to meetup with people over a scrabble game or a political issue? This is the place
OK TA TA BYE BYE --an online community of travelers
Virb--still in beta and I as of yet don't have an invite, but desperately want one
Wallop --got an invite and it has a sweet layout...still in beta
LinkedIn--business networking

Social Networking

I am doing a paper on social networking sites and so far its been really interesting. Today, I got invited to a new beta site called Wallop and its pretty radical. Well, how it looks at least. It is easy to change the look and there are some new features that I haven't seen on other sites like Facebook and MySpace. Also, the user is supposed to be over 18 which is better than MySpace. Why do junior highers need to network anyway? A friend of mine is a nanny for a family and the two girls, 11 and 9, both have a MySpace. Honestly, I think that's wrong. Why do nine year olds need to put pictures of themselves on the internet... even if its a private site, its just scary. Anyways, social networking sites are here to stay so I think everyone needs to make their decision about how they are going to respond to the trend... (I should add that 3 years ago, everyone said that blogs were dead, but I don't really think that's true, do you?)

Check it out...

I have a few invites left if anyone is interested in checking it out.

Library Thing is a site I found today. An interesting project.

A Sad Goodbye

Saying goodbye at 4am is still hard, even when half awake. I dropped off the "precious nugget heads" at SeaTac and left them to start the long journey home alone.

They maximized their luggage weight with all the shopping they did here, and it was cute seeing them walk toward the check-in counter trying to manage all the bags. Come back soon girls! I miss you already!

I just posted a few pics of their crazy antics...

There are days which are just about perfect.... and sharing them with friends who live far away make those days brilliant.

I cut the top off the space needle, but yes, we are in seattle.
G.B.O.T.

Last week, I inherited a Giant Box Of Tea from a recently departed coworker (not from the earth, just from my place of employment). There is an unknown amount of tea in this box. I do not know how many tea bags, but it is a lot. Could you expect less from a G.B.O.T?

Instead of sitting here counting them, I am just going to make a tally mark on my white board each time I take a tea bag out.

How many tea bags do you think are in the G.B.O.T? If you guess correctly, perhaps there will be a prize.

If I could choose a Theme Song for a musical written about my life, It would be:

"Chicago" by Sufjan Stevens

Just for fun, I am going to copy the lyrics here.

Bad for School, Good for the Heart=Visitors from Switzerland

I have a couple of visitors staying with me. The world famous Jenny Berger and Eva Maria. They have been here only a couple of days, but we have already done so much and more plans continue to build. At some point, I am going to have to do homework, but for now, I am thoroughly enjoying spending time with them.

The Old Farmer's Almanac word of the day.

There is no spoon.

Too many people rave about the Christian imagery of The Matrix. Yes, the Wachowski brothers use a lot of Christian images in their film trilogy, but they also use pagan images while mixing every imaginable kind of philosophy in the mix. The problem I find with comparing The Matrix to Christianity, is this...

In the film, the mind is the battleground for freedom. This is true, I admit. The saviour who will free all humanity from The Matrix is Neo who elevates his mind and will above the computer program that holds them captive. Trinity, the love interest, elevates human feeling above the computer program and brings Neo back from the dead through her love. The message? Freedom comes through and by the human soul. This is not a Christian idea.

In Christianty, freedom comes through the spirit, not the soul. Faith does not work through the mind, will and emotions. In order to have faith, the spirit must be stronger than the soul. Ironically, Neo is shown to have faith. He tells himself, "there is no spoon," and Viola! He can stop bullets and dive inside Agents. When has anyone gotten faith by just willing it? Or just feeling it? Or by telling their mind to believe? I don't know about you, but that doesn't workfor me very long, if at all.

The images in the movie can be powerful when used as a metaphor for Christianity. It is a powerful scene when Neo stops the bullets with his hand and picks one up to look at it. With the Spirit of God, we have the ability to stop thoughts and ideas in their tracks, treating them as silly and unimportant like Neo does the bullets. Yet, we have to be careful to not get carried away and write books of theology on the imagery in The Matrix and call it a Christian film.

A Reflection

Light must reflect off of something in order to be seen... probably common sense to you all, but at the moment, it seems quite profound.

"If there were not a reflecting Atmosphere, the sky would appear always dark, and you could see the stars even suring the day. In deep space, the astronauts see a black sky enen in sunlight. If our surroundings did not reflect light, we would live in total darkness, much as if there were no light at all" (18).

Various

I cannot claim to be a classical music guru, but listening to Mozart played on the cello is probably one of the best activities to do on a Friday afternoon while stuck at work in a very warmish stuffy office. The music makes is easy to stare off into space and find one's self walking along a rainy and dark cobblestone alley in Vienna hunting for that elusive coffee shop, or perhaps in a large cathedral, with the sun shining into the dusty atmosphere with confidence that it will be welcomed by the many pilgrims who have come from miles away to pray.

On another note, this seems to be the week in my film class to focus on 1980s action films. I am actually surprised at the excellent cinematography found in action. My first paper for the class is to compare Citizen Kane with First Blood. I would never have put the two together in any shape or form, but perhaps there can be some kind of paralells drawn behind a slaviciously rich mogul who dies holding a snow globe and a crazed vet who holes himself up in caves while wearing torn clothes as a bandana.

If you have ever considered owning a Wombat as a pet, perhaps you might enjoy Underdogs.

Scams

I think the whole "selling" the internet is such a scam. I called both Comcast and Verizon about their high speed internet service...

Comcast: Yes we can do that for you, but if you ONLY have high speed internet, it will cost you an ADDITIONAL set up fee....

Verizon: Yes we can do that for you, but it will take three weeks to get out to your house and set it up. HOWEVER, if you also order a basic phone service, we can set up the DSL in just 7 days!

Frustrating.

I went for the Comcast scam as it was cheaper in the long run.

Smells

I am a person who notices smells.

One of my favorite things is the smell of dirty children who have been playing outside all day in the dirt and looking for frogs and tadpoles. These children have a very distinct smell, kind of a earthy fishy froggy smell mixed in with whatever lunch they ate that day.

I do not like the smelly feet smell, especially on a hot day in a hot office. This is partly the fault of cheap shoes, but also the fault of extremely unventilated offices.

What is your favorite or least favorite smell?

NEW PLACE OF RESIDENCE

I am moved into my house, (YES!) but at the moment it is a little bit like camping as there are no complete working bathrooms in my house. I will leave the rest up to your imagination.

Laundry

I much prefer folding laundry than washing it. It is not the amount of time that bugs me, or else washing would be preferred. I think it is just touching all the dirty clothes, having to look for stains that need spraying and sorting everything into piles that just annoys me.

The reward of pulling warm clothes out of the dryer and folding them into neat piles on the bed makes all the messy work worth it. My favorite load to fold is the whites. I think that there is something about the way the freshly bleaches white clothes smell that makes me really happy.

Folding towels is also an art form. --just like folding napkins-- There are different techniques, but I think that my favorite is the "Three fold" technique.

Here is my best explanation:

Hold the towel up lengthwise. Fold over one third of the towel toward the middle, then fold over the other third. Now, you have a long skinny towel. Fold up one third and then fold down one third so that the ends meet in the middle. Now when the towels are stacked, they look like they are sitting on a shelf in the store, all neat and tidy.

Chicken Salad Day

Today was the first monthly chicken salad day.

There were two choices. One, still un-named, had dill, grapes and celery. The other, termed "C4" consists of Chicken, Celery, Cashews and Curry. Both were excellent and it was found that they were best when mixed together.

The event was followed up by a trip to "Cow Chips" for chocolate chip cookies.

The chicken salad festivities will once again resume on September 8th.

Candy

Everytime I go to Target and buy a 100 Bucks worth of candy, the cashier usually wants to know why I am buying so much. I usually tell them that I work for a company full of computer geeks and that suffices, but today, the cashier took it further and started asking the starting wage at my job. I think she was looking for a job. I am not sure if free candy is enough of an incentive to work at my company, so I told her to look into a carpentry apprentice job.

Here's the update of what I have been up to lately. July started with my big birthday celebration. Then I hopped on a plane to Boston and work a show. Next, I flew home and signed the papers for my house. I am now a homeowner!! Then I caught another plane and found myslf in Orlando to work another show. It has been a busy month.

What are the Chances?

So, last night after the expo hall closed, I was walking with some folks to eat dinner. We headed toward the Gas Lamp district that sits across the railroad tracks from the convention center in San Diego. Right as we reached the tracks, a very long train passes by. We were starving, so impatiently we wait. Right as the last few train cars are passing us, the train brakes and stops. We and the crowd gathered stop in disbelief. One of my group walks toward the tracks, looking for a way to cross, saying... "I've never seen a train back up, have you?" And as he approached the train, sure enough, the wheels start turning and it starts backing up....

So we wait for the train, the v e r y l o n g t r a i n to back up and pass us. Finally, it does and we cross the tracks toward dinner. We find our Mexican restaurant and sit down to a very nice dinner.

Does the story end there? NO! There is more to this adventure. At this point, the story is not all that interesting. Big deal. Waiting for a train....

So.

As we walk back toward the hotel, someone jokes about the train. Wouldn't that be horrible if another train passed by right when we wanted to go back? One person laughed and said, "well at least my hotel is on this side of the train tracks." The rest of us weren't so lucky....

As we approach the tracks, we hear the train horn. Oh no. BUT! not only was a train approaching... It was the VERY SAME TRAIN.

We waited for a third time for the train to pass.

Coincidence? Fate?

San Diego: A Room with a View

What an amazing city! It's treating me well despite my back hurting me and the fact that I now look like a lobster. I love the people I am working with so far, even Freeman! (A hard working Freeman crew? Yes, I got em.) The restaurant choices within walking distance of the hotel are incredible. I am going to try to work my way down cuisine types while I am here. So far I have had Seafood, Thai and Italian. Tomorrow...perhaps Mediterranian and well, I will keep my readers in suspense. My room over looks the bay, and even the annoying trains that blast by, horns blaring every half hour cannot put a damper on a view. And the shopping! Yes, I have spent some money. Friends like E* and Spumoni should be jealous of the dozens of little boutiques. If I HAD to live somewhere in Cali, I think it would be San Diego.

Dream Interpretation Please:

Last night I dreamt that I was working retail again. It was Christmastime and the store was crazy busy. The older couple asked me to pick out pieces from a Christmas Village Collection, but the problem was that the pieces were lifesize, so it was hard to manage the sale because they wanted smaller pieces. Also, my cousin was there and she was telling them that they should look in the Lynwood area for better Christmas villages.

I woke up thinking that I am so glad I don't work retail anymore.

Remedy for a Bad Day

After arriving home from work, throw on running clothes, lace up the running shoes and head for the trail. Run at least 3 miles, with the perfect overcast Seattle weather, and pour out all your frustrations to the Creator of the Universe. Once home again, open the sliding glass door to let in the fresh air, drink two or three large glasses of water, and stretch. Next, scramble yourself up "eggs extraordinare": onion, zuchinni, turkey kielbasa, eggs, pepper jack cheese, fresh tomato, garlic powder, sea salt, red pepper, and black pepper. Sit down and eat before settling in for a long evening of homework.
APA? MLA?

There are two different format styles for academic writing. During my long (and illustrious?) career in academia, I have exclusively used MLA. When starting my year in graduate school, I asked the question, "Do I need to learn APA?" I was informed that PhDs used APA, but while working on my master's degree, I would have a choice between APA and MLA. Even in my reasearch writing class, this past semester, we were required to learn and use one of the two forms, not both.

HOWEVER. This summer I am taking a class on media influences and I am required to use APA. So, here I sit after midnight on a Sunday (or early Monday morning) using google to track down examples of APA so I can piece together my Annotated Bibliography. I've been boon-doggled. GAH!

iPOD reset

Today, while working in LA, my ipod froze up. This means that I will have to reset it. Now, for those who automatically update their ipod each time they connect to their computer, this is not really an issue, but for those who manually update, like myself, this means that all my "on the go" playlists are forever lost.

I love "on the go" playlists, as each time i make one, its usually for a certain spontaneous adventure, and then I can listen to the soundtrack of said adventure over and over.

However, I can choose to look on the half full glass side of this little problem of mine and see my ipod as a blank page waiting to be written on...

New Balance

I have always been a little negative about New Balance shoes. I suppose that this is because I associate them with the 80s, and the Nerds who would wear them with highwater peg legged jeans. (VELCRO!) Lately, I have had some pressure to think otherwise. It may or may not be the influence of my co-workers, many of whom are proud to be called a Nerd. But, the real test came when I went to the mall today and tried on a pair. Goodbye Nike! Hello New Balance. My feet will never be the same.

*PLUS! I found a stellar pair. (Hows that for an 80s word?)

Sometimes it seems like everything happens at once, the good and the bad. I wish that life's circumstances would be strung out a little, maybe like a little advent calendar. that without the help of a certain "mr. google," no one shall get this one, unless they had some morbid and odd reading habits as a child... (however, I will say that this is one of the best children's stories that I know).

"At this time, an elderly Fly said it was the hour for the Evening-song to be sung; and on a signal being given all the Blue-Bottle-Flies began to buzz at once in a sumptuous and sonorous manner, the melodious and mucilanginous sounds echoing all over the waters, and resounding across the tumultuous tops of the tranisitory Titmice upon the intervening and verdant mountains, with a serene and sickly suavity only known to the truly virtuous."

head to http://timothydavis.blogspot.com/ and leave a comment for him!

Thanks so much for your help in this matter.

Try this one:

"We both like Weather. Not this or that kind of Weather, but just Weather."

Name the author and title. And, if you are so inclined, tell me why you think I chose it.

(as before, cheating allowed. but name the source)
What NOT to do on a Monday morning...

When you are getting out of your car to get a nice cup of joe at the local coffee shop, do not toss your keys in your purse that sits on your passenger seat, hit the automatic locks and then shut the door of your car.

I repeat, DO NOT DO THIS.

...just in case you were considering it.

A Near Perfect Day

...consists of...

a saturday
waking up at 6:47 am
lying in bed until 8:00 am
with a cup of tea, a journal and a Bible
sorting laundry into 4 piles on the bedroom floor
changing sheets on the bed
and airing out the room
with the fresh air
from the rainy day outside
bleaching the tub, toilet and counters
taking out the garbage
cleaning out old clothes from the closet
showering at 11:30
an americano and whole wheat marionberry scone at the honey bear bakery
selling books for 9.75 and 11.90 in trade
finding some treasures:
a book about C.S Lewis' library, a new Italian author translated into English,
a well-worn hardback biography of Madame Guyon, Thomas a Kempis,
and East of Eden by Steinbeck.
Trading in some clothes at Buffalo Exchange for 21.50
and finding a shirt and pair of shoes there for 21. 32
wandering through the stacks at the UW Suzallo Allen Library
holding call numbers and trying to find those
elusive books
walking the u district in the rain
eating pesto feta cheese pizza at
Pizza Brava
and seeing a poster for the 2006 Seattle Cheese Festival
and hearing "Creep" on the radio
praying with a bunch of radical people
ending the night at Kahili with laptop, books
another americano
and a friend.

Traffic Jam

*Disclaimer* this post has the potential to be a little intense and self-reflective. you may want to stop reading at this point.

There are times in life, when there are intersections in relationships. Of course, the whole journey and path metaphor is competely cliche, and here I am falling into the trap. But also, I am picturing this metaphor as a intersection complete with a traffic jam. Sometimes while waiting at a stop light in life, I look around and see the people around me, maybe notice something unusual, wave exchange nods.

Now let's say there is a real tangle and the waiting takes a long while. People begin to get out of their cars, start chatting and even share their Pringles or Oreo cookies with each other. At that point in time, there are no other people in the world except those people stuck with me in the mess o' traffic. The common experience of being forced to wait is so strong, it becomes a kind of unwritten contract.

But Then! All of a sudden traffic is moving, everyone jumps in their cars, start up their engines and drive away. No time to even say goodbye.

For me, this is how I feel life is at the moment. Its not a horrible thing, as who knows whom I will meet at the next red light or stop sign. And of course, it is not a perfect metaphor--I am sure the comment line will be full of people poking holes in it--but I think it conveys a feeling, that I know is real right now.

I wish things could always stay the same. But I guess that I wouldn't be living life now would I?

WHAT ARE YOU?

I am an INFP.
Introverted, iNtuitive, Feeling, Perceiving.
other INFP's are:
Shakespeare, A.A. Milne and Calvin (of calvin and hobbes)

On website called this personality: Intuitive Healer.

INFPs never seem to lose their sense of wonder. One might say they see life through rose-colored glasses. It's as though they live at the edge of a looking-glass world where mundane objects come to life, where flora and fauna take on near-human qualities.

I like that!

Guess Who Wrote...

"But she did not hear him for the beating of her heart."

Who wrote it and name the work it is from. Cheating is allowed, but if you must, name your source or it won't be counted as a proper answer.

GROW

I am addicted to a new game. GROW. However, I think that more than the fact that it is some fascinating game, the REAL reason I am addicted is because a certain co-worker of mine told me that I would not be able to beat it. HA! I am not one to shrink from a challenge...

I also suspect that I am really truly competitive by nature....
Below are some of my thoughts on this topic.

It may look like I am having a convo with myself, but I am not. I removed the other person as to protect secret identities. I have some top secret friends who would be removed from this earth if anyone found out that I was talking to them.

jennifer joy says:
you know what i have realized about myself recently?
jennifer joy says:
i have a competitive nature
jennifer joy says:
i always thought i wasnt
jennifer joy says:
but if someone says....jen you cant do that. or jen you are wrong
jennifer joy says:
i want to prove them wrong
jennifer joy says:
even if i know i cant beat them at it
jennifer joy says:
i just want to show that i can do it too
jennifer joy says:
that's my deep thought for the day.
